The key is used to open crates in TF2, but no one really does that. The game has its own economy and this key, is used as a high priced equivalent of money for trading in the economy. Its one of the ways Tf2 functions. Like if you see an unusual hat (rare hats that have cool effects) someone will tell you the price is a fed buds (A bud is the highest measurement in the economy.) A bud, is roughly 19 keys right now. So the way it works is a market and its really fun. Hopefully that explains everything to you :P
