Description

The listing, Used U.S. Stamp #1098 3¢ Wildlife Conservation-Possible Free Shipping has ended.

The Department issued this 3-cent Whooping Crane stamp, the fourth in the Wildlife Conservation Series, simultaneously through the Corpus Christi, Texas, and the New York, New York, post offices, on November 22, 1957.

Designed by Bob Hines and C.R. Chickering, the central subject of this stamp is a female whooping crane bending attentively over her two downy young, with the male bird in the rear standing guard. The pair of whooping cranes is predominately white against a dark blue background. The chicks and the area immediately beneath them are yellow, blending into green grass in the foreground. The scene pictures the combination of water and land areas sought-out by this rare species for nesting and rearing the young. Across the top of the stamp is the wording "Wildlife Conservation" in modified whiteface Roman, and across the bottom is "US Postage 3c" in modified dark face Roman. To the left of the central subject is the wording "Whooping Cranes" arranged in two lines, in whiteface Gothic.

The stamp was printed on pre-gummed paper on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 100 million stamps was authorized.
