Description

The listing, Used U.S. Stamp #1105 3¢ James Monroe-Possible Free Shipping has ended.

The Department issued this 3-cent stamp to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of James Monroe, through the Montross, Virginia, post office on April 28, 1958.

Designed by Frank P. Conley, the central subject is a likeness of James Monroe reproduced from a Gilbert Stuart portrait. The three-quarter head of Monroe, facing left, is situated to the right, with 1758-1958, arranged in two lines, in the lower field. The name "James Monroe" appears in a narrow panel, in white Gothic lettering against a dark background, across the bottom of the stamp. In the upper left corner, in a lighter solid field enclosed by an ornamental horizontal frame, is the value "3c" dividing "US" and "Postage" at the left and top respectively, which are in large Roman lettering against a background of wavy lines.

This stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of 70 stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
