Great detail on this one, Veomega! "make out a lot of the detail"? I can read it all! This is Constantius II as Caesar. He was one of Constantine the Great's sons. This one was minted in Alexandria, Egypt before 337 AD.

Thanks! For my own education; which words represent the Alexandria/Egypt mint?

The mint mark is on the reverse, at the bottom. There's usually a line separating the picture and the mint mark. The SM means Sacra Moneta, Then the AL means Alexandria. Not sure what the following letter means (another A?). I'm not an expert, but I'm learning...

...ahhh...okay, the final A in the Mint Mark is the Officina, or the department within the mint. A is the first officina, B is the second etc, but I have a couple that have a delta in Greek.

Very interesting, ya I saw references in other sites about SMALA and SMALB, etc but wasn't sure what they were about.

They definitely weren't consistent. Sometimes the Officina will be in Roman numerals, sometimes in Greek. And it can be at the end or the beginning of the mint mark.

I think the Alexandria mint was active for some 270 years or so, I guess it makes sense for variations to occur.

OMG. That's amazing. You're actually not supposed to clean them, because doing so lowers its value. I don't know why, though.

You're not supposed to improperly clean them, you'll get rid of the patina. But this one is well done.
