In 1880, Frank C. and Edmund B. Ball, two of the five Ball brothers of fruit jar fame, borrowed $200 from their Uncle George Harvey Ball, founder and first
president of Keuka College, to buy the Wooden Jacket Can Company (years later the brothers would reciprocate by providing financial support to their uncle's college).[6] The wooden jackets encased tin cans which held kerosene. Because the acid used to refine kerosene caused corrosion in tin, the brothers decided to use glass for the inserts of the wood jacketed cans. Initially, they bought the glass
containers from a factory in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 1882, the factory that supplied the glass containers was destroyed by fire.

Thanks for your bid Bogublog, they do, looking now - small jar stamp is stamped 5, medium jar is stamped - it is either a 6 or a 9 (can't clarify - there is no line under the number), unlike the small stamped jar (I figure it is indeed a 5 because the number 5 stamp has a line under it!

corrections - there are 4 large jars, 3 are clearly marked, the 4th is odd, no number but a symbol - if I had a key on my keyboard - I would be able to describe it :( winner of the set will have the choice of the 4 large jars...you choose - I'll send it with the set! the 3 large jars will be put up for auction at a later date (:~

the lid on the small jar - is unlike the cap/lid on the medium and large jar - the cap on the large jar (in the pictures) are stamped "Ball"...the other 3 large jar caps/lids have no stamps!
