Nina, you don't need one for every device in your household. All accounts are saved server side (unless you never join xbox live, but then a subscription wouldn't be needed for not joining). Being saved server side means that all of your account history (games played, achievements) are saved to Microsoft's storage when you are a Gold Member. So for example, say you have 3 xbox 360's in your house, only one gold subscription per account (gamer tag respectively) would need to be paid, and that account can be transferred via jump drive, or downloaded to another xbox 360. Now if you have the new xbox one, only one user account is required to have a gold membership on the device, and all other accounts on the xbox one are able to access nearly all options the gold subscriber has without purchasing subscriptions for all other accounts. So as an example, my fiance and I own the xbox one. He has a 12 month subscription, but my subscription has expired. Because my fiance has gold, I am able to access nearly everything he can (including multiplayer and netflix) even though my subscription is expired. I hope that helps!
