Description

The listing, Used U.S. Stamp #1097 3¢ Birth of Lafayette Bicentenary-Possible Free Shipping has ended.

The Department issued this 3-cent stamp on September 6, 1957, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Marquis de La Fayette. Due to widespread interest in the observance of this anniversary, the following cities closely associated with his memory were chosen for simultaneous first day sales of the stamp:

Easton, Pennsylvania — the site of La Fayette College

Fayetteville, North Carolina — the first town in America named for La Fayette

Louisville, Kentucky — the opening day of the 1957 Kentucky State Fair was called "La Fayette Day"

The likeness of La Fayette reproduced on the stamp is from the portrait by Joseph Desire Court. To the left of the portrait is a flintlock rifle of the Revolutionary War period, and to the right a replica of the sword that was presented to La Fayette by the United States government. Both the rifle and the sword are entwined with an ornamental vine. Directly above the portrait is the wording "1757 La Fayette 1957" in dark, modified script. An article of headwear from the period on which is superimposed the letter "R.F.," a torch and a scroll flanked by a furled flag on either side are in the upper portion of the stamp. Immediately below the portrait is the denomination "3c" in whiteface Roman in a shaded circular frame from which emanate long slender leaves bearing a fleur-de-lis on either side. Across the bottom of the stamp is the wording "United States Postage" in dark face lettering.
