Description

The listing, Used U.S. Stamp #1108 3¢ Gunston Hall-Possible Free Shipping has ended.

The Department issued this 3-cent stamp to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Gunston Hall, home of George Mason, through the Lorton, Virginia, post office on June 12, 1958. Designed by Rene Clarke, this stamp features a view of the riverfront side of the classic mid-Georgian brick home, which William Buckland completed in 1758 for George Mason.

George Mason was author of the "Fairfax Resolves," of the first Virginia's first constitution, and the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which served as the basis of the first ten amendments to the Federal Constitution. The crossed quill pens in the upper corners of the stamp symbolize these. Across the top of the stamp, in a horizontal panel, is the inscription "1758-1958 Gunston Hall" in dark Gothic. In the upper left portion of the stamp is the wording "Home of George Mason" in dark Gothic, and across the bottom is "United States Postage," in whiteface Gothic. The Denomination designation "3c," in white Gothic, is shown against a solid background in the stamp's lower right hand corner.

The stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in sheets of 500 stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
