The listing, 1950s School Safety Patrol Badge has ended.
Now....I'm sure some of you will be STUNNED to know, that old Doodlebug was a cop! Yep...it's absolutely true! School years 1955-56 and 1956-57, I WAS in fact, an official, sworn-in, traffic cop for Papago Elementary School, in good old Phoenix, Arizonie! The school safety program was sponsored by AAA! Actually, I was a "Patrol Boy". In those days, the kids (patrol boys) controlled the traffic crosswalks around the schools....NOT adults! Isn't it amazing...no one was ever run over by a car. We had hats, white belts that went around your waist and across your chest, a badge (hence...the badge you see), and an 8 foot, round staff. We used the staff to keep the kids from crossing the road until we stopped the traffic. Notice I said WE...the patrol boys...NOT adults, stopped the traffic. We would raise the staff and the little rug rats would scurry across the crosswalk. The truth is....we were totally entrusted with that job. There weren't ANY adults even around...not even any teachers. Only 7th and 8th graders could be a patrol boy. Oh yeah....there were NO girls on the patrol. It was the big kids taking care of the little kids, and it worked out GREAT! Aaaah yes....those truly were the "good old days".
