The listing, VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH 1940s Mailman Playing Banjo General Store w/ Coke Sign, old photo has ended.
This auction consists of one vintage 1940's photograph of an old man playing a banjo, in front of a general store.
I know the history of this old photo and the scrapbook collection it came with, so can tell you that the man was a mail carrier for a post office in New York state (see the hat with the mail carrier badge).
The general store he is playing in front of, started out as a roadside stand in the 1910s.....literally 2 oak boards laid across stacked rocks to make a table. They sold sandwiches, milk, and pie to the tourists who were now arriving, since the automobile was becoming popular.
The business went on to have a store, a gasoline station, a campground, and finally a great little diner.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was from that area and frequented their diner. He signed a photo for the owners and it hung in their diner for years (yes, I now own it).
I like the Coca-Cola sign in the background. A neat old vintage photo and yours for free (well some credits).
