Basella alba is a fast-growing, soft-stemmed vine, reaching 6ft in length. Its thick, semi-succulent, heart-shaped leaves have a mild flavour. The stem of the cultivar Basella alba 'Rubra' is reddish-purple.
Germination temperature: 65 F to 75 F

Days to emergence: 14 to 21 - Scarify seed to hasten germination.

Direct seed 1-2" apart, 1/4" deep, or start indoors and transplant outside after danger of frost. Thin to 6" between plants, rows 12" apart. Provide trellis. Seed can be saved 4 years.

Typical of leaf vegetables, Malabar spinach is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and calcium. It is low in calories by volume, but high in protein per calorie. The succulent stems are a particularly rich source of soluble fiber. Among many other possibilities, Malabar spinach may be used to thicken soups or stir-fries with garlic and chili peppers. Malabar spinach can be found at many Chinese/Vietnamese/Korean/Indian grocery stores, as well as farmers' markets. It has been shown to contain certain phenolic phytochemicals and it has antioxidant properties.
