"Shrub or small tree, 4-15ft high. Twigs and leafstalks hairy. Fruits are hairy, red, and arranged in a pyramidal structure. Fruits present June through September. Autumn leaves are deep red. Often found in dry, rocky soils.
Native Americans used fruits in cough syrup. Gargled for sore throat and tonsillitis. Root bark used as an astringent and to staunch bleeding.

Bidders should be told that all sumacs are invasive - - They are the dandelions of the small tree world. Underground roots run in all directions from an established plant - - up to 1o feet from each plant. And ridding your garden of this is a major chore - - any little bit of root that is missed can become a complete plant. My suggestion: Only grow this gorgeous plant in a container. It will need to be a large container, such as a wiskey half-barrel.

They can be like Aspens in that respect, only on a smaller scale. I just buzz the shoots with the lawnmower if they pop up in the lawn, pruning shears and scissors work too.
