i've had it for thirty years.the ring in the base that screws into the gas/oil lamp bottom has some build up of oxidization.the light insert was something i added as a light,it came without any light source when i bought it.it came from an antique store that specializes in victoriana.i don't have a provenence on it.thats all i can tell you. thank you for your interest.i believe it to be as stated.

lavender rose...can't argue with you there.i see things listed as vintage that are ten years old,so i know you have to be careful.the way to succeed on a site like this is to be as straightforward as possible,so i welcome all comments.it's the only way to go.

timothy, they don't come with bases,at least not the real ones.the real ones screwed onto an oil lamp base or over a fixture on a gas line.so i would say if it comes with a base, made just for it,that it's not the real old light.thanks for the info about ebay.don't go there much.
