Red California poppies are one of the more spectacular small flowers available. The red color against the bluish-green foliage is a color that’s hard to miss, even from a compact plant. These small plants can be grown anywhere that gets plenty of sunlight, and they need little maintenance. They are tolerant of some drought, deer resistant, tolerant of poor soils and they even sow themselves for the next year. California poppy seeds are one of the easier seeds to sow, with soil, sunlight and moisture provided, they need no help to get started.

Plant in border areas, in the front of the flowerbed where they will get noticed against the larger plants or place them in indoor or outdoors containers. When the seedlings get about 2” in height, thin out the young plants, keeping each plant at least 10” apart.
