The listing, sterling silver handled pie knife has ended.
stamped sterling on the handle. the blade is stainless. the blade shows signs of rust and pealing near the hilt.the jeweler offered me $10.50 for scrap.
Questions & Comments
The blade will have to run up a ways in the handle for it to be sturdy so yes you are right. Moisture getting between the silver and the metal and staying for years will eventually make even stainless steel rust.
@ Pogo, obviously you are quite knowledgeable about silver. Was wondering, on this piece , if the handle is silver and he says the blade is stainless, then how could it be "rust" on the hilt? Perhaps from what is under the silver?
Lucky you! It's OK, you can leave it to me in your will. . . Oh wait, since I am probably old enough to be your Mom, that won't work. Or you can just tell what you bid on this one, to make up for it? teee heee.
I looked up the hallmarks he explained and it's definitely not copper from what I found. But that's only if he explained the hallmarks correctly. If he did then it was made in England around 1792 and would definitely be sterling silver. From the looks of the photos it fit the time period too that's why I wanted it. When silver tarnished like that or has that patina people can mistake it for brass or copper.
Yeah, I wanted it REALLY bad too, even bought more creds for it, but I forgot to refresh after, and so it wouldn't let me bid :( lesson learned. Let me know please when you get it, I was really curious to know if the one part below the handle looked like it was copper, thought maybe the whole thing was plated over copper. SORRY for taking up your comment space robertfred2550.
Sorry about the fork is just really had to have that. It was a great piece. I've lost a lot on here so when I want something I bid the house to make sure I get it.
I probably won't win this now but thanks for the free shipping bro. All my auctions are always free shipping. It can get costly sometimes but it's worth it in the long run
