London flag leeks grow large, thick, with white stalks and are slightly bulberous (fun word) at base. Shanks up to 8 in. long and 2 in. in diameter. Mild onion flavor

A cool weather crop, they are at their best when day temperatures are below 75 degrees F.

Leeks may be planted from seed 4 to 6 weeks before the average date of the last frost or from transplants in the fall. Transplants may be set out in early spring to mid summer.Plant in full sun in rich, well-drained soil that has been amended with 1lb of complete fertilizer per 100 sqare feet. If planting seeds, do so shallowly, at only 1/8 of an inch, then thin to 9 inches apart. If setting out transplants, dig holes 6 inches deep and 9 inches apart. A double row will help save space.

Drop the leeks into the holes, but do not fill with soil. Water will collapse soil into holes over time and leeks will position themselves.

*Keep leeks watered and never let them completely dry out.

*Leeks grow well with most plants. The pungent odor emitted by the leeks confuses and repels insect pests. In addition, if you allow a few leeks to go to blossom and go to seed, the blooms will attract beneficial insects, which will further protect a nearby plant. Leeks also make good companion plants for carrots and celery. Be sure to keep a few seeds for next harvest.

It's fun to learn about all of these plants! Thanks for the info. It's nice to know that some plants actually like the cooler weather! :)

Yep. I can't grow a cabbage or lettuce for the life of me during the summer months here in southern California. I've tried to shade the plants etc. When I grow lettuce, I have to do companion planting by using the shade of taller plants as like zucchini. Our climate is so arid that lettuce just fries.
