Description

The listing, **RARE and EXTINCT IN THE WILD** Be the ENVY of the neighborhood!! The Banana Lotus :) has ended.

This Auction is for 5 very rare seeds. (Please see below for GIN extras). These are the most beautiful and amazing plant in the world (my opinion of course). They are SO rare and hard to find. I personally am the only person I know who has ever owned one.

The cost of these seeds have jumped in the past few months. This is due to the lack of mother plants in China. They are almost gone. You can only find them in the Yunnan Province in China. The person I usually get my seeds from said they have only received half of what they got last month due to supply. SO.. I do not know how long I will have them. They are currently about $2 a seed including shipping. That is enough in itself for a seed.

TO MY LOYAL GIN CUSTOMERS:
As a GIN gift you will get TWO full sheets of the seeded wrapping paper (The gift box in the picture comes with 4 sheets and it costs $14 plus shipping so I split it in half :). This is the coolest stuff. Just cut a small piece and plant it. You will have a pot full of flowers. One sheet can go a very long way. I did 10 medium flower pots with one full sheet :) You will also receive 25 Rose of Sharon, 5 large pumpkin, 5 acorn squash and some surprise vine seeds. AND a Surprise gift :)
ALSO, I have cold stored 15 seeds in a plastic baggie. They will come already ready to go and already in their soil. They will be ready 12/28/13. So they are all set. I highly suggest still storing them for a week or so in your own fridge. This helps so much with FAST growth. This will up my shipping cost quit a bit, however you are paying a pretty penny and deserve it :)

Questions & Comments

I would bid on this just as our weather forcast has said freezing rains and possibly snow tonight and tomorrow and down to 12 degrees tonight. This is not typical Arkansas weather, but I am curious about this plant. So, I am watching, then decided to go for bidding, and did fan you.

Remember these are from the mountains of China. It gets very cold there and snows. I live in New York and have many of these outside. Here is the deal with them:
A few years ago it was realized that these were endangered and pretty much extinct. Some were brought to America and other countries. When they grew them they learned that if it was a warm climate they would grow all year long and do well. If it was a cold climate they would die down during the winter and they grow back in the spring. I mulch mine every fall. Every spring they all grow back. It is very cold here and I have never lost a single one. The ones I have indoor do grow bigger. The outdoor ones are beautiful and grow just fine :)

I live in northern California, do you know which growing zones are recommended for these?
Jan 7th, 2014 at 10:15:47 PM PST by
Original
They grow all the way to zone 5 with proper mulching in the fall. The warmer the climate the better. Just plant them in partial shade :)

I am assuming this is an inside plant, at least where we have fairly cold winters?

No I live in New York. I have a bunch outside. You have to mulch in the fall to prepare for winter. They will survive down to zone 6 and 5 if taken good care of. They are from China. China has winter :)

Watching, debating if I should try it, I'm best with these type of near northern desert type plants.I've done really well with my Yucca, which isn't very common here in the Northeast (State Flower of Az. or New Mexico I think).

Nice! Not sure if my thumb is green enough to grow these! http://www.kew.org/science-conservation/save-seed-prosper/millennium-seed-bank/index.htm You can "adopt" a seed at Kew Gardens Seed Bank they are saving thousands of seeds of endangered or near endangered species. You don't actually get a seed , but they keep it and grow it. You get "adoption papers , though! Lol!! It's a wonderful thing! These plants are the favorite food of elephants! (possibly why Elephants are also disappearing (aside from the known dangers). I hope whomever gets these , won't waste them ! These are so rare! It would be a lovely gift to giving a deserving botanical Garden or College Green house near you! We have a few , here in CT.

In all honesty you will get many answers to that question. It is actually not a banana tree. However in China they do cook and eat the flesh inside of plant. I added a paragraph below that was wrote from an Amercian who grows them. If you ask in China however you will get a different answer.

Musella lasiocarpa is an ornamental banana that is commonly called Chinese dwarf banana or golden lotus banana. It is closely related to bananas, having been once included as a species in both Musa and Ensete. It is native to mountainous areas up to 7,500 feet in elevation in the Yunnan Province in China. It typically grows to 3-5' (6') tall, featuring a conical trunk-like pseudostem, upright paddle-like gray-green leaves and distinctive lotus-like flowers (2-3 per plant) that grow erect from the top of the pseudostem. Gardeners grow this plant not for its fruit (which is small and inedible), but primarily for its flowers and to a lesser extent for its foliage, both of which lend an exotic and tropical aura to the landscape. Leathery, broad-lanceolate, banana-like leaves typically grow to 1-2' long. Flowers bloom throughout the summer. Each upright inflorescence (8-12" long terminal panicle) consists of a cluster of yellow tubular flowers subtended by broad, stiff, waxy, yellow bracts. Flowers resemble a lotus just prior to flowering, hence the common name of golden lotus banana. Flowers usually first appear in the second year of growth and annually thereafter. Each inflorescence will last for several months (up to as long as 6 months). Flowers are reminiscent of those found on king protea (Protea cynaroides). Flowers are followed by inedible fruit (to 2" long) which often does not appear on plants grown in the northern parts of the growing range.
