The listing, Moldavian Dragonhead - RARE flowering herb! has ended.
Also known as "Snow Dragon", this beautiful purple-flowered herb is naturalized from eastern Europe* to western China. In this country it is RARE!
I just received a packet of these seeds from a source in the Ukraine, who states that all of her seed is "non-hybrid, 100% organic & heirloom" Woo-hoo! (got some melon seeds too - watch for my listings!)
The plant is very fragrant, with both the leaves and the flowers emitting a most refreshing scent of lemons. It is sometimes cultivated for its essential oil. The flowers remain fragrant and fresh for several weeks, and can be used to make a refreshing tea with a mint-lemon flavor. (The young leaf shoots are edible too, apparently.) And there are medicinal uses as well.
Dracocephalum moldavica is a ANNUAL growing to 1ft. Here's the information I dug up about Dragonhead/Snow Dragon: its native habitat is the dry hills, stony riverbanks and valleys at elevations from 600 - 8000 ft. in western China.
It does like light and well-moistened soil. But it is very adaptable, and will, apparently, accept sandy, loamy, or clay soils, whether acid, neutral or alkaline. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or full sun. Hardy to zone 7.
It is in flower from July to August (pollinated by insects).
Sounds great, doesn't it -- can't wait to try it myself!
This auction is for 20+ seeds. (note that I only have one packet of these beauties, so there won't be too many of these offerings)
Sow seed in early spring where you want them to grow. Pinch back the shoot tips in May in order to encourage bushy growth.
* for you geography buffs: Moldavia is an ancient geographical region that is now divided between Romania, Moldova and the westeren Ukraine.
