HAPPY NEW YEAR 2006 USED Russian Postage Stamp

The New Year was celebrated in the extreme antiquity in Russia on the 1st of March and it was connected with spring – the beginning of the revival of nature. The Moscow Council resolved to consider the New Year according to the Greek church chronology, from the 1st of September. The New Year Eve had been celebrated in September during more than 200 years, and it was celebrated in September 1698 for the last time. Next year already Emperor Peter I, having returned from his journey to Europe, ordered to celebrate the New Year on the 1st of January.
