Hide and Seek delivers a good thriller that grips you in the beginning and holds you until the credits roll at the end.
The movies stars Robert DeNiro as David - a psychologist and father who moves his daughter, played by Dakota Fanning, to the country after her mother commits suicide. His hope is that the isolation will help the girl deal with the loss of her mother, but things go wrong when she develops an imaginary friend named “Charlie.”
As DeNiro struggles to connect with his daughter, her friend begins to play a dark game designed to punish her father for the suicide. Bad things slowly start to happen with Fanning’s only excuse being that “Charlie did it.”
At first, DeNiro tries to use “Charlie” as a way to reach his daughter and help her understand what is going on and her own responsibility for the problems. He soon discovers there is something much more sinister about the imaginary friend, and learns just how much they are in danger.
DeNiro is great in the film, and does an excellent job as a father trying to reach his daughter. He is calm and patient throughout the film, and seems to just want to move past the events that have brought them to the country.
Fanning, whose normal blonde hair is dyed brown, is also great in the movie, and continues to impress even in the company of such great actors. She never seems scared by her friend, but also lets us know there is something very wrong going on in that house.
As the movie progresses, you can’t help but wonder just how messed up this girl, who looks more and more gaunt throughout the film, is from the death of her mother. You also have to question DeNiro’s judgment to treat her.
By the time you find out what is going on, Fanning has moved from possibly crazy to tragic. She does a great job of showing this through the quiet way she carries herself in the film, and the facial expressions she uses when talking about “Charlie.”
Hide and Seek delivers several jumps throughout
