they are double jump rings, they are solid, not covered, so I would guess the are some type of gold colored metal,not made of gold of course, because I would melt them down and keep them, I just find it hard to work with them , but the plus part is they stay nice and secure to what ever you attach them to

I have also heard them called split rings - you are right they are a pain to work with but hold very well when you have one in place - no gap to worry about - I even have a pliers that supposed to help open them but haven't done well with that either. How many mm?
