Coin shops don't really exists any more, and they never paid much, collectors still collect, and collectors are where you are going to get your best prices, but it's a buyers market... Honestly it's the best time to start collecting, more and more people are getting rid of "grandpas coin collection" fewer and fewer people collect now, considering the values and rarity of some of the coins being lost true collections can only go up in value.
And I will never polish a coin... It hurts my soul lol... But if you want to be my guest, an eraser is an easy way that leaves no residue, you can also just use a baking soda and water paste.
and I know what you are saying. being somewhat of a collector, it breaks my heart to think they would melt down these old coins for the silver content. just think of the history behind these coins, the many hands they have passed through. if only they could talk.....
I have a coin from about 400 ad, it's not much to look at but it puts me in awe every time I look at it... Just thinking of how different the world was, how someone hand struck that coin, just to be in there for even a second and see what the world looked like... Coins are literally history you hold in your hand
