The listing, VINTAGE LETTER 1890 Doctor Pharmacist OLD LETTER antique pls read has ended.
This lot consists of one vintage letter from 1890 from "H.C. Whisler, Drugs, Paints, Sundries" on South Broadway, in New Brighton, PA.
The letter is dated Aug 26, 1890 and is addressed to "George's sister" Miss Minnie Bradshaw, living in Darlington, PA.
I won't give away ALL of the interesting details of this vintage medical letter..but will give you an idea of how the story went....
George was H.C. Whisler's Pharmacy assistant or clerk...after he died, H.C. sent his sister (Minnie) a letter, describing his illness and the things that he tried to do to make her brother better.
Basically H.C. tried some different remedies and elixirs on his assitant... rectal injections, pain medicine that was created in his pharmacy using Peppermint, ginger, rhubarb, campher spirits....applying mustard plaster to his pain?, etc.
Eventually when he had to, he called in the physician but George died shortly thereafter.
This letter describes his symptoms, his treatments, and you can almost feel the guilt that the store owner feels over the loss of his friend and assistant. Very tough for him to detail the events to George's sister, since he also left behind a wife and child.
This letter is over 110 years old, so my guess is that George died from an illness that could have been easily treated nowadays!
This is an original old letter and it is in very nice condition for its age! It is a 2 sheet letter (front and back) with 4 pages of writing total. Both pages are handwritten on the Drug Store letterhead.
A very riveting story from days gone by.
A great addition to your vintage medical, vintage homeopathy, quack medicine, vintage doctor, or vintage drugstore collection!!
