Description

The listing, Vigna Caracalla - Corkscrew / Snail Vine with BONUS!! has ended.

This quick growing, evergreen twining climber is a close relative to the runner bean, grown for its pendants of twisted flowers, like coiled snail shells, up to 5cm (2”) across. The fascinating summer flowers are followed by cylindrical green fruits in late autumn. Requiring a minimum temperature of 15°C (59°F), Vigna caracalla is best grown in patio containers that can be moved indoors to a heated greenhouse or conservatory for the winter. Alternatively, grow snail vines outdoors as an annual. Height: 6m (20'). Spread: 2m (6')

This is my ONLY auction of these seeds. The first two photos of Vigna Caracalla - corkscrew vine are mine from my garden and it's my plant that I have in a clay pot, that has been with me 7 years now. I grew this from seed and it flowers beautifully every year. The scent just drifts on the summer breeze and scents your yard, garden and surrounding area with delicious fragrance.

This auction will include :

Vigna Caracalla - 3 Seeds

**BONUS** - Phaseolus Caracalla - unscented snail vine - 4 Seeds

These seeds will arrive with detailed germination instructions to ensure your success!

This, for me, has been a super easy plant to have around and care for. I would recommend having a heated seed mat available to you to help aid in germination if your climate doesn't provide those conditions.

I started my plant from seed 4 years ago (only one of the five seeds germinated). I live in the Chicago area so I bring it into the garage to winter. The first year I got a few flowers and one seed pod but I didn't know much about it and so I didn't let the pod dry on the vine. The following years I got blooms but no pods. In the fall I cut it back to six inches and also found several tubers while loosening the soil before wintering it in my garage. I was afraid I might have killed it but I brought it in the house last week and whala its sprouting several vines!!!! Not sure if I will get any pods but I plan on taking clippings and try to get them to take root. I also planted 5 tubers and soooo if those take off I will have 5 more vines. One important thing about this plant which is so easy to take care of once you get the seed to sprout...It requires ants to open the blooms so you don't want to keep it too close to your patio table where you eat outdoor. It truly is a magnificent vine!

They are such an amazing plant aren't they? You may find you aren't getting any pods - because you need the ants to pollinate them. You should notice, just as the blooms are beginning to take shape, that the base of the flower starts to ooze a sticky substance. That is what should be attracting your ants...and they will continue to hover around until the blooms are all gone. With any luck, you'll have some viable seed pods formed by the time it's ready to come in...then it's just to wait for those pods and seeds to dry.

Thanks so much for the comment and information! Best wishes for a great gardening season!

What is a seeded heat mat? I have never heard of one before and where do you get them?

Oh - a heated seed mat is just like a heating pad for a human - but with a much lower and more controlled temperature. You use them, because your soil temp is approximately 10 degrees cooler than room temperature. For quite a few tropicals, that is just too cool to germinate - so you use your heated seed mat to warm that soil and wake up the little seed. You can usually find them (around seed starting time) at your local Walmart or even your local greenhouse may have some on hand. Ebay would also be a good place to look if you can't find anything locally. I hope that helps!

"That is what should be attracting your ants...and they will continue to hover around until the blooms are all gone" I wondered can you use a q tip to do the pollinating??

I really don't know..I would love to find out! Guess who is going to be hand pollinating a flower or two, then sealing them in a mesh baggie to see if they produce seed. Will be interesting to see!

I have been looking for both of these. I trade heirloom, organic non gmo seeds maybe if you have extras we can trade? I have too many seeds to list but if you are looking for something in particular maybe I can help you out and we can trade. Please contact me. :)

Ty so much for the kind invitation - but this is all the seed I have left from these plants. I am only keeping my large vigna caracalla and will get fresh seed from it again this year. Sorry I can't do more....

They will grow anywhere in a pot - I'm in southern Ontario and mine blooms beautifully (as you can see from the pic) but you do have to treat them as a tender and bring them in before frost. Hope that helps!

It really is a wonderful plant! I wish I had more seed to share than I do. For next year's seed - you're looking at roughly Oct. or Nov. (for my area at least) before those pods are dry and ready to be harvested. If you choose to purchase your seed - please be sure to use a very reputable seed distributor - the seeds are expensive and you don't want to waste your money on seeds that have been infested with weevils (so gross they look like little worms coming out of the seeds and the seeds are duds) or seeds with poor germination. It takes a little time, but your research is well worth it. Good luck!
