Description

The listing, Old Asian Coin, Real Silver? HELP!!!! lol has ended.

This is an asian coin that I have aquired over the years. I have no idea what it is, might be worth $1, might be worth $1000, I have no idea. If you know anything about this coin please let me know. I will not take it down even if I find out the value of it.

The penny is not included, it is only a guide to show the size of the coin.

The coin is slightly larger than an Ike dollar and just as thick, with no sign of clad.

Bid at own risk. I know nothing about it lol

nicci, My book has no price for this coin but the copper coins minted in this style are listed in the hundreds or thousands. So if it is genuine and authentic I would have to say this ~can~ be quite valuable. So back to the real question :)

I wouldn't even know where to begin on this thing. I have never seen one and have no idea where it came from. Been collecting coins since I was 9, my grandpa gave me a lot and he was in the military and went all over the world. I found it while looking for a high value coin and this was with it. So..............lol

Wow, went away for a day and the auction blew up! lol, I agree FatTony, we do all have those coins that are not so appealing to the eye in regards to looking like they came straight from the field. lol, But as you said it is better to leave them in such form then to clean them. When I priced mine a few years ago, they were worth about 20 bucks a piece in the current condition, that was before silver rose. Mine are clearly real silver as I did the old fashioned coin trick and also inherited them from my Grandpa who was stationed in China back in WW2 for a time, he brought lots of cool coins and currency back with him. You must have some of the same books I do as mine didn't give a range for what is was worth, more or less just a bunch of varieties of the trade dollars. But to be honest I just like the research lol. GREAT INFO HERE!~

Chinese Tibetans Coins - Most of these coins are modern Chinese fakes. Available on eBay as described above and via traders. To check authenticity of these coins just verify its design and luster, and if possible verify the contents.

I saw a lot of these stuff from Tibetans in Dharmshala and north India and believe me there is whole set of market to forge such coins from cheap silver looking metals - They used to say Tibetan silver.

So best of luck to everyone, and especially seller

I love when one of my coin auctions turns into an open forum of sorts like this one has. You can never know too much about a hobby as expensive as ours, and the way collectors on this site share information and knowledge of our hobby really makes it worth sticking around. It's not always about money for me. Lots of times yes... :), but not always.
great auction

Love this coin! I'm glad to see people on Listia NOT accusing other people that the item they have is fake, and also helping each other. It makes me happy :)

Kinda embarrassed to say it- but i'm at work -- so I looked up China coins with google and then I went to Ebay and put in Silver China Coins and then compared the pictures to the coin we have on Lista-- Ebay Item #150566058905. I also emailed the Seller on Ebay asking for history and books for Chinese coins

FatTony, Ty for your help-- We value everyones opinion, and since I watch your coins alot (yes only watch-- after about the 3 days they are well out of our price range), I appreciate your opinion very much -- I did find this coin on Ebay (just FYI-Sitting at 4bucks) according to the pics- if real-- it is a "1890 Yr China Silver Coin *GuangXu GuangDong KM* Dragon"-- IMO-- Still Love it and would love to add this to his collection -- the smiles this will cause --

It appears to be a trade dollar, I have a few one similar to this and the other dates 1921 the no dates are usually older, they are silver. Nice coins, I think it is safe to say they're not worth 1000 but then again to the right collector anything is possible. Thanks for listing this, I like the ones I have and need 1 more to finish the display case, I have a Franklin halve in that spot now and it throws everything off!~ :)

NOooooo..... Please don't clean any of your coins **wpoates**. Some of the beauty comes from the natural toning and to be honest, no matter how dirty or corroded your coins may be, they will be worth more in that condition than they will be in a ~cleaned~ condition. Also please realize that any collector that has been in the hobby for any period of time will be able to notice a cleaned coin a mile away. One of the hardest things about our hobby may be learning to accept a dirty or corroded coin i n our collection, but the truth is, we all have them :)
Just my opinion :)

Question -- Is there a proper way to clean up old coins so that you don't kill the Value of the coin??
Feb 24th, 2011 at 9:40:01 AM PST by
Original
I don't know. I send some coins off to be graded that have values that are high being graded. I personally don't buy graded coins that say cleaned. I know some old timers that use baking soda to clean their coins. It doesn't cause any damage to the coin but I wouldn't do it to a high value coin that should be graded. I also only buy graded coins from NGC and PCGS.

I agree. For me, half the fun of a coin like this is the research. Like you said somewhere, even if it's not real it's still a great item to show and share with the kids. I could show my kids some reproduction old bar coins from Asia and tell them they are imperial credits from starwars and they'de believe me :) where's the harm ?

That was my guess and had that age in mind, looks to real as can be determined by a picture, I have one very similar to this as stated above and it isn't as nice as this one but still a nice coin. If this is the real deal it is silver not a 90% but still higher silver composition than any other metal. I think this coin is real by looking at it as it has that dirty silver look to it~ I would say that is worth bidding on even if you don't speak Chinese and can't read what the coin says lol~

I can't speak chinese, its obvious, because now looking at the pictures its sideways and upside down lol

Anybody with a copy of The Standard Catalog of World Coins "1801-1900" can see it if they check under China 1888. Without holding the coin in my hand to inspect it I would guess it is the $1 silver coin.

found it in the ginormous encyclopedia o coins. Now the real question. Is it authentic. Hmmmmmmm. to bid or not to bid :) It is from China. It is or was made to look like a 19th Century coin. I'm not a collector of 19th century coins from China, so where to begin in authentication is beyond me.

I don't mess with Chinese stuff any longer. Got burned a few years back and only stay with USA, except I have a few Canadian maples and Australian koalas.

I have some counterfeit morgan dollars that I used to train some people on how to spot fakes. If you would like one, let me know and I will list them. Very useful. I have fake panda rounds as well, for training purposes only. Those are very well made.

lol, I found it funny~ Well it wouldn't be a bad trade really except the halve is not in that great of shape, just something I have used to fill that spot, I think it looked better before I got all but one spot filled because now the halve throws everything off and I am always being asked why I have that coin in there or why doesn't that coin match the others etc., I don't get mad as the asking party is usually a young relative and I am just glad they're interested in looking at my stuff. lol, they tell me I have treasure~ When I was a kid, I always considered gold treasure so it is true things change with time, as I have no gold coins lol~ Now that is a not so funny story and long winded joke. You do pretty well with wit so fret not!~
