I only used the comcast access box and hooked the router to it. It was not a phone outlet.

You will need to install the disk and put in a password. Plus, you will need comcast or a service providing internet. This will give you conection through this wifi router. You need a router to take a laptop, Cell phone or I pad. It is easy to install and instructions and disk or in this box.
