Description

The listing, 3D PURPLE BEAN HIBISCUS VINE has ended.

This vine can grow anywhere between 4 to 15 feet in height depending upon the variety. It does not have a wide trailing spread. Its lightly aromatic foliage is blue green in color and textured smoothly. What is interesting about this vine is its purple flowers and striking purple colored seed pods known as lablab, that are borne on the vine almost all year round (depending upon when it was planted) ) except the winters. A food crop, to the butterflies and hummingbirds, however, for humans the seeds are poisonous as they contain high concentrations of cyanogenic glucosides. They need to be boiled for a long time, to make them edible.

Hi Shona, ya know.... I'm thinking they maybe the same now, but this was the name they gave me, when I was given the seeds for my plant.

Potato, po-ta-to. I am sure same. they look too similar to be a different bean but they are a show stopper. I stopped and asked the woman who owned the ones I am speaking of, while they were growing along her fence. they are such a brilliant color of purple..and I am in lower Arkansas 15 miles from the Louisiana line so, very close..! .

Also, is this a picture of yours growing? what do you have them growing on. they look very maintained as the ones I saw were trailing all down a home fence by the road..

Believe it or not , one is on my side fence, one on lattice work that surrounds my patio, and one on an old timely 6' steel tomato stake. All are clipped often to keep the shape I want.

However dormant now, all dead and crispy, I'll cut them to the ground. they actually already have sprouts up about three inches, ready to start again. They've reseeded themselves.

This is not a hibiscus; it is hyacinth bean vine seed (lablab purpurpeus).
Seeds are edible, but should be cooked for a long time, with several water changes. Vines are annual but any fallen seeds will sprout and make new vines.
