I'm not sure what is circled in the one picture of the "mark"?

This is a real working pencil. It is a solid sterling sliding pencil from the Victorian age about 1870 to 1900. I looked them up for the first time last night and i could not believe what I saw. The prices are very high! concdering the size of the peace. almost makes me want to put it on ebay.

Okay, a few of you have asked if this is sterling, I am going by what I was told, by the tarnish, and by the scent of it. I have not found a mark or stamp, but it is an extremely fantastic item nonetheless :) As far as I can tell it is Sterling but I cannot find anything on it stating so. Thanks for the inquiries.

is there brass showing at the very end of the barrell where the lead would come out? It looks like some of the silver has worn away there in the picture? Just wondering if it is a photo trick of light or if it is really worn away.

Yes, not sure of the size of the lead though, you should be able to get it at an office supply store.
