Here's an opportunity to try out 5 different varieties of delicious heirloom beans from Europe. The lucky winner will get 12 each of these 5 marvelous varieties:

Cassoulet Beans: creamy white beans - the must-have ingredient for cassoulet - the classic bean dish from Tarbes, France. (They're called 'haricots Tarbais' when grown in France). Pole habit, may be eaten as a green bean as well as a dry soup bean.

Borlotti-type bean: an Italian classic, tan-colored beans, beautifully striped & splashed with red - delicious! (Pole)

Badda beans (caramel/white) AND

Black Badda beans (black/white): These two varieties are grown in the ___ region of Sicily. The quintessential ingredient for pasta e fagioli (a pasta and bean soup/stew), they are also delicious as green (snap) beans (pole habit)

Alubias de Tolosa: Highly prized in Spanish Basque In the Basque tradition, these plump black dry beans are cooked slowly in an earthenware pot with garlic and olive oil. other recipes include spicy green peppers and pork ribs. Yum.

This auction is for a total of 60 heirloom beans!!!

well you wouldn't get much nourishment out of 60 beans LOL...they're for planting...all of the stuff about how tasty they are is to get you psyched up to growing them to harvest and cook

Yes they're pretty rare - and expensive...I've read that in France they go for up to €30 per pound...seems incredible that folks would pay so much for beans LOL

Actually, I got them from a local organic grower...they were selling 'em to eat, but when i asked if i could plant them was told "of course you can - it's what we do each year"
The problem with supermarket beans is not that they've been killed, but that they tend to be pretty old & dry

The alubias may be bush type (haven't grown them yet myself)...the other 4 are pole beans
