It is. There are 2 versions of fullmetal alchemist based on these graphic novels. The first one FMA got ahead of its source material during development, so the studio animation team made up their own story as they went along to keep up with the fan base and stay on the air longer. The second FMA Brotherhood faithfully follows the manga and is widely considered to be a stronger series than FMA.

lol I learned that the hard way, I had the first series on dvd and it blew my mind when I saw brotherhood lol

Same here. I resisted Brotherhood at first because it felt like I was watching recaps or flashbacks. But the story got seriously epic after I stuck with it and gave it a real chance.
