All the packets listed are for this year. 2014. Actually the sell by date is 12/2014 on the back of the packet. Thanks for asking. Good luck on bidding.

I found this site that answered better than I could.

Sunlight: ◾full sun

Soil conditions:
◾requires well-drained soil
◾requires high fertility
Prefers fertile, well-drained, slightly acid soil that is high in organic matter for best growth and yield, but tolerates a broader range of soil types. Has moderate moisture needs.
Special locations:
◾outdoor containers - Small-fruited and dwarf varieties are best, but all do well in containers.

So it seems both in containers and in garden. I always put mine in my garden- note though eggplants don't seem to like tomatoes.
