RARE MOUSE MELON VINE
Melothria scabra

FUN - EASY TO GROW- EDIBLE - HEALTHY - TASTY!

An old-time favorite snack of ancient Aztec's! Believed to have been long lost, Mouse Melon's rediscovery is making a big splash in Cottage Garden's and Farmer's Market's.

These tiny 1-2" melons are more than just cute, they're also edible and taste like a crispy cucumbers with just a hint of lemon. Eat right off the vine or use in salads and salsa's. Thrill your guest by serving this unique delight at your next Garden Party.

Mouse Melon is also a great choice for a kids first garden! And so much more fun than growing the ole bean in a cup.

Delicate Ivy like leaves become the perfect backdrop for masses of miniature green-striped melons making this vine an ornamental show piece in the Best Of Flower Gardens. But don't let its unique beauty fool you...this Ancient Vine Also Rules The Vegetable Garden!

Though a bit slow on the 'get go' - - -when Mouse Melon does take off, it doesn't play around. In fact, just about the time you think it's not going to amount to much, it will magically turn into a mass-producing, eye-popping, garden thrill almost overnight! So be ready!

ZONES: reseeding annual in all zones.
HEIGHT: 6-10' works best with wire mesh to attach and climb up.
FLOWERS: Scented. Yellow to pale yellow.
FRUITS: July through November
SOW: 6-8 weeks indoors before last frost or direct sow where you want it to grow. This vine grows well in pots with support. Regardless which method you use (I use all three) first prepare the soil with a moistened loamy composted soil or seed starter. Set seed on top of soil and lightly press to make contact, then sprinkle more moistened soil on top and lightly pat to make contact. Keep soil moist (not wet) until seedling appears. If direct sowing, once two sets of leaves appear-just leave the plant alone-no more pampering-its got it from there!
