The listing, Bean Fest #2 - 6 kinds of Rare American Heirloom Beans (10 each) has ended.

Another great sampler collection! These are all old-time favorites from all parts of our continent:

Rio Zape: The oldest of the varieties, these delicious beans, purple streaked with maroon, have been grown for at least 1500 years along the Rio Zape, in central Mexico (home of the ancient Mogollon culture). Similar to pintos, but with a hint of coffee and chocolate flavor. AND they're excellent string beans.

Golden Tepary beans: indigenous to the Southwest, they are said to be the most drought tolerant of all bean varieties (they do need water to get started). Higher in protein and fiber than other beans The small beans plump up a bit but keep a meaty, dense texture. Bush or short vine habit.

Yellow Indian Woman: A rare heirloom bean that is grown in Native American communities in Montana. It is a small, yellowish-gold bean that, when cooked, is creamy and resembles the flavor of Pinto and Black beans. It is ideal for slow cooked dishes.

Marrowfat: these were first popularized in the mid-1800s as a baking bean (dried), but are also great as a fresh shelling bean. The creamy texture of these plump white beans makes them great for soups. They have a meaty, bacon-like flavor.

Golden Jacob's Cattle: kidney shaped, white and caramel speckled (aka 'trout', 'coach dog', 'dalmatian' or 'appaloosa') is an old favorite - they're full-flavored, holds their shape under long cooking, stand up well to plenty of seasoning, and have a rich aroma. Bush habit, said to be adapted for cooler weather/ shorter seasons.

Black Coco: A triple-treat bean! easy to grow - 2' plants set abundant 5" round pods of plump shiny black seeds. Coco can be harvested as a green bean or ten days later as a good shell bean, but really comes into its own as a refried or soup bean. Cooks quickly with a delicious aroma that promises a hearty robust soup

This auction is for a total of 60 fantastic beans - a chance to try them out, then save seeds to grow your favorites again next year.

Planting, harvesting, eating - yes....people do string them for beads ( the prettier ones) but even then you'd want to grow them out so you'd have enough to do something with
