Description

The listing, Red, White & Blue: all-American Corn Fest has ended.

Here's a rare chance to try out 3 wonderful varieties of corn! One is a recently-developed blend of heirlooms, bred for nutrition and multiple uses, one was developed in the mid-1800's, and the third is an ages-old Hopi variety...how cool is that?

RED:
Double Red Sweet Corn
100 days. This intensely red sweet corn is great for corn-on-the-cob or can be dried to make traditional corn bread or posole. High-yielding, open-pollinated variety adapted to organic culture, producing full ears on stocky, red-streaked stalks. The red comes from antioxidant anthocyanins. Developed by Alan Kapular of Peace Seeds, who has dedicated his life to the protection of plant biodiversity A very interesting guy - read more here: http://www.corvallisadvocate.com/2012/0830-alan-kapuler/

WHITE:
Stowell's Evergreen Sweet Corn
80-100 days. Enjoy the sweet, old-fashioned goodness of this treasured heirloom. Tall, 8-10 ft stalks bear 8" ears with 16-18 rows of tender, creamy white kernels.
Called "evergreen" because it holds its fresh taste in the field, it was named after its breeder Nathaniel Newman Stowell.
Here's an all-American tale: After years of refining the strain in the 1800s, Mr. Stowell sold two ears of seed for $4.00 to a 'friend' who agreed to grow it for his own private use. His friend then sold the seed for $20,000. A bitter lesson, but ever since then, Stowell's Evergreen has been one of the most popular white sweet corn varieties for home gardens and fresh market. Open-pollinated, this is old fashion pure corn seed you can save.

& BLUE:
Hopi Blue Flint Corn
100-110 days. Considered a staple corn of the Hopi people, this corn can be eaten as a sweet corn when young; when dry it can be used to make flour. Hopi Blue has a high protein content & makes wonderful tortillas. 7" ears on 5-6 ft tall plants.

All 3 varieties were organically grown and are, of course, non-GMO strains.
This auction is for 15 seeds of each type - 45 seeds in all!

Do you know if you have to isolate each of these varieties? Or can I grow them in one big bed. . .great auction!

Well here's the deal: these 3 types of corn have different maturity dates, so they will 'tassle' (make pollen tassles on top and silk on the future ears) at different times (in theory)...if only one kind is tassling at a particular time, then cross-pollination can't happen...if you wanted to be sure (and your season is long enough) you could stagger your planting: start with the white, wait a week & plant the red, wait another week and plant the blue...another factor is that the white is less likely to affect the red and blue than the other way around (has to do with dominant genes) ...I don't know whether the red or the blue has dominance over the other, but with the maturation dates spread out, it shouldn't be a problem...
