Not sure of the name or variety of basil. I received just a few seeds from a friend and have been growing in my flower beds for over 5 years as ornamental plants.

I have easily grown these from seeds and have transplanted several plants.

I love the dark burgundy leaves and how they look against my other flowers and shrubs. The leaves are frilly and some are shiny which adds a lot of interest. When you touch the leaves you can smell the basil fragrance.

I keep them full and short by pinching off the top of stem as they grow. They can get about 2 feet tall. That is OK if it is in the back of a flower bed. If they get tall a few of the under leaves will turn more of a greenish shade. But still looks nice.

They will produce a stem of pink flowers and then turn to seed heads, at which time you can just pinch off and save or throw back in flower bed to reseed. To prevent plants going to seed just pinch off top of stem/flower. In the fall I just strip the seeds and throw into flower bed and they reseed the next year. I also save the seeds to throw in new flower beds in the spring and give to friends so they can enjoy as much as I do.
