Description

The listing, Late Victorian Gold Bar Pin, c. 1890-1910 w/ Elaborate Cross Design - See Photos! has ended.

I can't believe I'm listing this on Listia for FREE– please be generous in bidding. I paid a fine sum of money for this originally at an estate sale– it's asking price was in the 3 digits! I've uploaded plenty of photos so you get a really good idea about what you are bidding on.

Length: 20mm

Width: 9mm

Thickness: The bar itself is about 4mm and then there's the pin on the back that sticks out.

Weight: 4.8 grams

Design: Has a beautiful pattern on it with a cross in the middle. There is some left over dark blue enamel in the middle of the cross and in a few of the crevices in the pattern. This could be cleaned out, or left as is to preserve that vintage look.

Condition: Nice condition. The back has some dents and scratches, as the metal seems real impressionable. Beautiful piece for it's age.

Composition: This is gold in color, but I'm not sure what this is made of. It is not stamped anywhere on it, though that wasn't uncommon 100 years ago. Not sure if it's gold filled, gold rolled, plated, or what. Your guess is as good as mine.

Check it w/a magnet. If it sticks to the magnet, it is a base metal w/gold overlay. If it doesn't, it is real gold. Now to figure out the Karat, I'm not sure how to do that w/o a gold testing kit; BUT... in the time frame you mention, 12K was very popular & used a lot, especially in set jewelry (meaning multiple pieces in one unit; for instance, a ring/earrings/necklace; or, necklace/bracelet/earrings; etc). However, you also say the metal is impressionable, which could mean 18K or 21K, possibly even 22K or 24K. For our purposes here tho, it is probably enough to know if it is real or plated, thus the magnet test should be enough. Make sure it is a relatively strong magnet (your fridge magnets won't work for this test).

Hope this helps!!;:~}

It does not stick to a magnet. I tried a few different magnets and cannot get any of them to stick to it.
