Description

The listing, VINTAGE 1842 LETTER - Natchez Mississippi Bank, Rail Road Department orig old letter, 169 Years Old! has ended.

This auction consists of one vintage letter from 1842. This original letter is 169 year old!!

It is dated May 2, 1842 and it was written by Thomas Henderson....and sent to W.P. Montgomery, of the Commercial Bank Of Natchez (Mississippi).

My best attempt at transcribing this old letter: ".....Ward Moffitt paid me in New Orleans $725.00 on the afts (behalf?) of the Bank which has been credited as your? note. They handed me also a letter for you, said to contain money which I send as you requested to the Rail Road Dept..."

(could you imagine New Orleans in 1842?....and he's carrying lots of cash for that time..for the Rail Road - wow)

ADDITIONAL INFO:
W.P. Montgomery (from my research so far) was most likely William Pinckley Montgomery, a very wealthy cotton plantation owner who was later financially ruined during the Civil War.

Although he was a very successful businessman, the Confederate Army burned thousands of acres of his cotton, to prevent the Army of the North from seizing the cotton.

The Commercial Bank of Natchez was incorporated in 1836, with a capital of $3,050,000, The Commercial Bank of Natchez operated in Natchez, Mississippi... and later had branches in Brandon, Holmesville, and Shieldsboro, Mississippi.

I believe, from court records that I have found, that this bank went out of business about 1855 and in 1855/56 a court decision was made on how to satisfy the existing stockholders.

A rare glimpse into 1842 life and business, well over 160 years ago!

A very RARE addition to your vintage letter collection.

Thanks for viewing. Please note that their is a some separatiion along the right side fold creases in the letter. Also, this is a "stampless letter"...after it was written...it was folded....then the name written on the outside "W.P. Montgomery Esq".....then it was sealed with a wax seal (see the photo showing the red looking dot on the back of the letter)....good luck

I like this! I have a stack of newspapers from 1970 to 1914 that I pulled out of a dumpster. This would be a good addition to that collection :P
