Description

The listing, 1 year Vitex Negundo sprout to feed honeybees has ended.

I now have a few 1st year vitex negundo sprouts to offer. The first pic is of the actual sprout for this auction...The second pic shows what it could become with proper pruning and care. Once established, vitex are both heat and drought tolerant, but they will not suvive above zone 5 without being potted and brought inside. These plants do a great job of providing food for honeybees during Summer until a hard frost cuases dormancy to kick in. Proper pruning, fertilization, and water management will give you a lovely , light blue-flowering, small tree that will reach up to 20 feet. In fact, this was dug from beneath a gorgeous mother tree that size..They had a 150 foot driveway lined with them. I have already pruned this one for branching growth and to ease the high price of shipping these days. USPS seems to be the most reasonable shipper, but they will charge almost much for box size as they do for it's weight. Right now, the tree is 27 inches tall above the roots, so I must charge by PayPal for shipping costs... Vitex negundo is double-duty plant, as it both flowers well and feeds my honeybees during a period when almost nothing else is blooming for them. This will save plenty on supplemental feeding going into Winter. That feeding gets expensive when a 4 lb. bag of sugar will yield only about a gallon of bee food, that gets taken up by the bees very quickly. Beekeepers are only in recent years realizing the imortance of these trees for maintaining a viable apiary., and are in increasing demand by beekeepers here in Texas Thanks for looking and feel free to inquire on any concerns that you might have.
