To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the explorations of Samuel de Champlain in 1606 and to coincide with the Washington 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition, the US Postal Service and Canada Post jointly issued The 1606 Voyage of Samuel de Champlain commemorative stamps on May 28, in Washington, DC, Ticonderoga, New York, and Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada. The stamps were designed by Rejean Myette and Francois Martin of Montreal, Quebec.
Canada Post issued its own pane of 51-cent stamps and souvenir sheets identical to the Postal Service version. These stamps and souvenir sheets were available through Canada Post and at the Canada Post booth at the Washington 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition in Washington, DC, May 28 through June 3, and through the USA Philatelic Catalog.
A skilled cartographer, Samuel de Champlain played a key role in French exploration of North America. In 1606, he served with a coastal expedition that began in what is now Nova Scotia and sailed as far south as Massachusetts.
