‘HOME RUN DERBY” is a 1960 TV show that was held at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, pitting the top sluggers of Major League Baseball against each other in 9-inning Home Run Contests. The show was produced and hosted by actor/broadcaster, Mark Scott.

The series aired in syndication from Jan 9 to July 2, 1960 and helped inspired the Home Run Derby event that is now held the day before the annual “ALL STAR GAME.” ESPN stage a revival of the show in 2003.

Winner received a check for $2000 and was invited back for the next week against a new opponent. Loser would get $1000. If a batter hit 3 Home Runs in-a-row, he would get a bonus of $500. If he hit 4 in-a-row, he would get another $500. Any Home Run after 4 in-a-row, was worth $1000 each.

Hank Aaron won the most money during these shows … winning 6 of 7 Derbys for $13,500.

The only player to hit 4 Home Runs in-a-row, was Jackie Jensen (who also hit 5 in-a-row).

The show was canceled after the announcer, Mark Scott died from a heart attack on July 13, 1960 at age 45.
In the wake of his death, the producers decided not to replace him and canceled the show entirely.
