Description

The listing, Antique China Serving Pc. ~VICTORIAN DESIGN~23K Gold Filigree Accents "BEAUTY" Is An UNDERSTATEMENT! has ended.

For your consideration is this beautiful 1940's Imperial Serving Plate by Salem China Company. It is beautifully accented with a 23K gold filigree design & beautiful Victorian scene as ctr. focus. The back is marked w\ the co. hallmark & 23K Gold. It is 11" in diameter.

BEAUTIFUL is an Understatement!

The Imperial series feature's Victorian scenes which the designers created based on Victorian pictures featured in the very popular upscale "Godey's Ladies Book" which was actually a magazine publication from 1830's to 1898.

Although I don't know the exact number, there were several different plates in this series. Ea. plate was sold individually. The Imperial Victorian series was only manufactured in the 1940's & 50's.

I know this particular plate was manufactured in the early 1940's for 2 reasons:

1 - In 1951 the Salem China Co. began putting a star followed by a 2 digit number, below the emblem on the back of the plate. The no. indicated the yr the plate was manuf. The star & no. were not used prior to 1951.

2 - This particular plate was a 10th anniversary gift for my neighbors grandparent's who were married 1933.

It is in pristine condition w\ absolutely NO cracks, crazing, chips or scratches.

I acquired it a few yrs ago when her Mom passed away. Her Mom's hm was filled w\ not only her own treasures, but her grandmother's treasures as well. Sue has no children & both she & her mother were ONLY children. Because of this, she simply didn't have rm to keep everything. Before having Goodwill p/u the things she wasn't able to keep, she graciously gave her friends the opportunity to keep whatever we so chose.

This is just 1 of numerous things I chose. However, due to my own drastic downsizing to a much smaller hm, I've had to select numerous things to find new hms for. Most of Sue's things are on that list, so I can keep more of my own family heirlooms.

Thanks for commenting Carol.....I have 5 granddaughters, all of which have no interest. Of my daughters, there's only one that has a genuine interest. The other daughters, I think take and accept things ONLY because they feel they should.

Interestingly, one of my grandsons loves ANYTHING that's a family heirloom. He's been a sentimentalist since he was probably just 5 yrs old when he began asking about where things came from & about family members that were no longer with us. When he was just 6 he gave me his favorite toy which was actually a fluffy floppy brown puppy stuff animal which his father gave him when he was two. He slept w\ it every night until he gifted it me for Christmas when he was just 6 1/2. He'll now be 18 next month & the fluffy floppy puppy is still with me in my bedroom. Last yr I told him that I was going to return it to him when he had his 1st child. He told me, "No, I want you to keep it, and I'll get it back from you one day at the appropriate time". I'm assuming he means when I'm gone. He's such a tender loving kid which is sometimes hard to believe when I watch this giant 6'4" 235 lb. defensive back playing.

Just beautiful. I love all vintage items, especially ones that show the life and era of Victorian time. Loved the Dresses (but glad we women of today don't have to dress with all the heavy, multi garments women did in those days.LOVED THE STORY OF YOUR GRANDSON'S BEAR. Our grandchildren are precious mementos of our history too.. just living ones.lol

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments. I too, love the beautiful dresses and would love to wear them. While you and I would be dreadfully uncomfortable in them, it was nothing to them since they wore that type of attire daily.
And yes, our grandchildren are such wonderful blessings. One of my daughters once told me that she felt I loved my grandchildren more than she and her sisters. I told her the only reason I loved them so deeply was because I loved each of her sister and she first. Josephs bear is so special that I'm extremely happy he turned down my offer to pass it on to one of his children. Of course when he does have children, I'll probably feel differently and will again want to pass it on to them.

thanks for the history lesson about the plate- I have one but with 2 ladies on it. mine must be early 40's also. A friend gave us 2 as part of wedding gift - the other fell and broke in half but saved it too.

Oh, so so sad that one was broken....That's why I'm painfully having to let so many things go. I'm so afraid of them being broken as my new home is so much smaller and I simply have no way to nicely and safely display things in this hm.

This is so very special. My own son is a lot like your grandson. I am a first generation american with many family heirlooms from far away. Someday i am going to have to down size too as i have 2 curio cabinets packed full. I listed a few things recently but more on the way. It was comfort to know that winners of those listings shared my sentiment of items as i had "sellers remorse" on a couplle of them..lol..great auction and already a fan of you & kitty =^..^=

Thanks for commenting....Yes, I've had sellers remorse on two items I recently auctioned but it's just something I must do.....Just let go of it slowly. It seems much easier than a huge lot all at once. When I moved to NC from FL I got rid half my personal items and that's not exaggerating by the slightest. My new home is about half the size of my FL home and even it was filled to the brim. It was awful the last 3-5 months before I left because I had 3 giant yard sells and watched things leave my home in mass exits...And totally love your =^..^= ! And I'm already a fan of you as well.........Thanks so much Susan!

I agree .. family history is so very important.. it's sad to say .. i am the only one who is the keeper of such things.. and i too have all the treasures... and the worries of were they will end up...

Thanks for your comments. I know it's sad for Susan as well. Perhaps you'll have a family member that will show some interest in your heirlooms somewhere down the road. It's also possible that there is already someone that's just hesitant to voice his/her interest. My father was that way because he didn't want to rile his sisters who had determined among themselves who was and wasn't going to receive particular family treasures and heirlooms. Fortunately my grandfathers sister (my great-aunt) stepped in when my grandmother passed away and did what she could to make sure things were distributed in an equitable manner. No one would argue with her. She was 98 yrs old, very spry and highly respected by our family whom we then considered our matriarch upon my grandmothers passing.

Wow That's really pretty i have a setting for 12, But i can't remember if it's pink oround the outside? I have 3 sets of antique china, and don't use any for family get togathers, I should for holidays but they wouldn't even notice it, Until they broke a piece then they would know!! You won't have any trouble selling it, Do you have several or is it a serving plate?

Thanks so much for your interest and comments. It's just a serving piece....But it would be beautiful if yours have the pink outer edge....

Great auction and story! How wonderful of her to offer her friends first instead of just losing them to who knows where. Love this plate! will be checking out the rest of your auctions! F & W :)

Thanks....Yes, it was certainly gracious of her to offer so many wonderful things to her friends. I moved out-of-state and in to a much smaller hm. When I last spoke to her in December I asked her if she would like me to return her mother's things as I would likely have to let them go due to my smaller home. She said her circumstances haven't changed and she doesn't have rm for anymore that what she already has.....It's almost as hard to part with her stuff, as it is my own so I'm doing it slowly, one piece at a time.....
