She promptly followed through with her morning routine. Though it seemed simple enough, it was a fraction of the biggest commitment she had ever made. After she washed off the remnants of last night’s makeup, she filled in her waterline once more. She saw black lined dagger eyes, complimented by the dark hollows of her exhausted face. After slipping her sweater over her head, the thin, pink, river-like scar on her wrist peeked up from beneath her sleeve. It taunted her. She yanked the sleeve down with her right hand, and clutched it into place with the left, on which it resided.

When she pulled her hair back, all of her flaws became visible. It was true that she only felt beautiful when she could comfortably manipulate her imperfections in front of a mirror, and it was true that she found it easiest to hide behind her reflection, but this morning she could not shake the reasoning behind the thin mark on her left wrist. She smeared on her makeup, which she liked to see, sometimes, as warpaint she put on before she had to brave another day on her own personal battlefield. She forced a little smile in the mirror, to give herself a push. It fell hopeless and flat.
