They are the same size, color and food value as tree peaches. Vine Peaches make excellent preserves and pies, and have a vine-ripe flavor and texture much like a mango. It's an easy plant to grow, with fruit maturing on spreading vines in about 80 days. Train on a trellis, or let it grow ont a fence.
Plant after danger of frost in hills 4 to 6 feet apart. Plant seed not over 1/2 inch deep 4 to 6 to the hill, pressing soil firmly over them. When plants are well established thin to 3 to each hill. Seed can also be started indoors for an earlier harvest. Treat yourself to an unusual fruit!...Packet includes 12 fresh seeds

These originated in China, where they were used for pickling. We do not eat a lot of sugar, so these taste great to us (fresh). They are not as sweet as most melons. I think that may be what puts some off... W/B Lost the other auction, wasn't paying attention. *LOL*

Thank you very much for your input, Sally...I appreciate that. I would pre-suppose that those who consume lots of sugar would be the ones who find them not as sweet as you do.

You are very welcome! I think you are likely right, about the sugar, we only use 5-10 lbs. of sugar a year. BTW, the taste of the vine melon is somewhere between a honeydew melon and a pear. They have a lot of seeds for their size, but the vines produce many fruits.

I've heard these are edible, but very unpleasant. Is this true?

Hi, and thank you for the interest. I believe from what I have read, that they are best used for preserves and pies. This indicates that the raw fruit lacks the sugars necessary to make it very dilectable right off the vine, but I have not heard that they are very bad eaten fresh.--only not as good as most hope for. I am sorry if I disappoint you .
