They do work well with long thick hair, I have very long and VERY thick hair. Useing them in my hair and my grown daughter uses them too. So I started decorating them to match out fits. People st a rted asking were did we find these. So I just started making them to sale.

If you can twist your up, you should be able to use them. Actually I just had my hair cut, 25 inches we sent to locks of love. That left me with just below my shoulders length. I use these hair stix all the time. Hope that helps answer your question.
