The Peace Medal coin was is the first new nickel in the U.S. Mint's Nickel Series. Created as an actual replication of the coins that Lewis and Clark carried. They were known then as "peace medals." They traveled with presents, such as beads, flags, uniforms and these medals to present to Indian tribes as physical tokens of friendship. On the obverse, an artists rendition of President Thomas Jefferson. The reverse features two shaking hands. This universal gesture is widely recognized as a symbol of friendship. The words "peace" and "friendship" are inscribed along the edge of the coin. The hands themselves are those of a Soldier and a Native American Indian. Identifiable by the military cuff of a uniform and the braided chevrons; and the other hand ornately decorated with a beaded border and an engraved with an eagle.
