The listing, Clear Optical Calcite Crystal / Iceland Spar Mineral Rock has ended.

The winner will receive the beautiful clear optical calcite crystal, also known as Iceland Spar in the photographs. NOTE: it has natural imperfections/ fractures. The formation of this crystal IS natural. It was not cut. This crystal is approximately 3/4" by 3/4" by 1/4".

Iceland Spar is a clear, transparent, colorless crystallized variety of calcite. It splits along natural cleavage planes to form natural rhombs. Clear optical calcite (Iceland Spar) variety displays an optical illusion called double refraction. When you look through the crystal, it splits the light rays in two, producing a double image.

History suggests the Vikings used Iceland Spar to assist with navigation. It was named Iceland Spar as that was where it was first discovered.

It is said that optical calcite crystal amplifies images and helps you to see double meanings hidden in communication.

These Iceland spar are very sppecial with so many purposes from ancient times. Iceland has these all over the place & they still have much function is modern day.. My sister says WIN THIS The split images are so cool. I saw hers when in cali & they are nice!! They are very distinct from other crystals I've seen

Might as well as it is warmer there than here,,lol,,She goes every couple of years to see the northern lights and hang out in the Blue Lagoon hot springs. I would love to go myself to rock hunt & soak :) I luv your doggie in profile pic.

Oooh! Is this the same thing as the "Sunstone" that Vikings would use for navigating the seas? They'd use it to find the sun in the sky at noon, if it were cloudy, and mark where the shadow was on a wooden dial/compass.

The sunstone was used as navigation by the Vikings also :) Sunstones are I beautiful! This spar is in the calcite family.

My sister went to iceland last year to photograph the northern lights. She brought a couple of these back & they are very special. They do split the light and have this clarity unlike other crystals. Excellent auction & watching!!
