5 Cerinthe Major seeds (aka shrimp plant /Honeywart)
This is one of my favorite plants outside the Vigna Caracalla (cork screw vine). I love the blue green leaves and the dark blue / purple blooms. I started my seeds indoor early then planted them in a large flower pot on the porch. Every one who seen it loved it and wanted to know where to get one. The plant is approximately 18 in. high, has grey-green leaves and nodding blue / purple tubular flowers that are approximately 1 in. long. These are surrounded by large heart-shaped bracts, which, as the weeks progress, change their color. The leaves that clasp the flowers darken, and change from blue-green to a fleshy purple. To collect seeds check between the bracts for the black pea size seeds or place a white plastic sheet or cloth under the full plant as it will unpredictably Expel the seeds away from the plant late summer through autumn.
Annual that self seeds readily.
Heat tolerant, Hardy 23*
Height: 18-24 inch.
Bloom: blue violet
Foliage: Waxy Blue Green.
Sow Indoor:
Sow in January to March, normally 4 to 8 weeks before planting outside. Sow at 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in pots or trays in a good seed compost. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal inside a polythene bag until germination which usually takes 5 to 21 days at 21C (70F). I just started some as a test and they sprouted in 4 days. I placed them in a dixi cup of damp potting soil and Perlite (50/50) then placed the cup in a zip lock baggie by my kitchen window (south facing). These are very easy to germinate.
