Questions & Comments

I know you know how rare theses are.It is kinda strange but these type pictures are still made today. The ones I have seen of full term newborn infants are amazing, but at the same time so sad.The ones done today by reputable photographers are so well done unless someone told you, you wouldn't know it was taken postmortem. I think it's important to pass such things as this down to the next generation so they get a better understanding of our histories. Good luck with your auction. Worth every credit.

Memento Mori is another name for these, Very collectible! I think they are great & do what they were meant to, Capture the likeness & memory of the person. Sorry about all the negative comments, people did things so different back then that many say is taboo today. Hope they don't live in a really old house, they might not want to touch the doors! Most people took one off the hinges for viewing of the body in the "Living room"....Oh what secrets old homes have! Nice collection you have, very nice.

these are creepy, I sure would not want someone selling pictures of my dead relatives, especially a baby. Even if it is from a 100 years ago

Wow, I can not believe how uninformed some people are. This was the only way the parents had to remember their beautiful baby after they died. Most people back then did not "own" a camera, so there were not 100 pictures taken BEFORE the tragedy happened.
There are still photography companies today that do this type of photographs.
Good luck on your auction!♥

How do you know its postmortem? Sorry to ask, but the images are too blurry to tell much of anything.

I would never say shame on you......it's kind of odd, and a bit creepy if it's not your relative, but clearly they are a piece of history....a sad piece, but history nonetheless and should not be forgotten. I have no problem with these....hope you get lots of bids!!

I have some pictures in my family albums of postmortem infants. Both pictures taken in the 50's. One on each side of my family. It was a very common practice and were done out of love and to never forget the child who was lost. I occasionally get grief from users about my Skeleton cameos as celebrating death or taking it lightly. Truth is, those people will never bid on your auctions. Just block them and move on. Good luck with your photos. Those who understand the history will appreciate these photo for what they were, a treasured keepsake of a departed love one.

my best friend took pictures of her baby boy who died moments after birth and for all of us that was grieving the loss of baby hunter especially his mamma those pictures was the only thing that she has to hold on to when she misses his sweet face. good luck on the auctions and god bless

Obviously, this auction is not for everyone. However, this is an amazing piece of history. Postmortem pictures were very common- look it up. I hate that people feel they need to berate someone for their listings. I don't want to bid on comic books as I have no interest, but I'm not going to bash someone because it promotes violence. Best of luck to you.

what are postmortem? Are these of deceased children? Kind of haunting. But so unique wish the starting bid was a bit lower. But I understand these pics can be rare in some parts of US.

yes this child is deceased. this photo is about 150 years old. I'd say 1860's

People need to understand that life 100+ years ago was different than it is today. People are too easily offended today by things of which they have no understanding. Please don't let the ignorance of others get to you.

I too have pics of my grandson who past at an hour old. However I would NEVER sell them and it is not something that we share with others! I cant imagine profiting from someone else's tragedy!!!! I say Shame on you!!!!

well since I used listia to get rid of them, I dont feel Im profited from them. I know none of these children, nor are they part of my family. I think you should keep your shame to your self. I nor these photos are here for your judgement.

It's the death thing. I think they are interesting part of history, and yes, it's done more today than people will admit. Even though I don't collect these, others do. I do like old photos and have family ones.. good luck. Don't take offense of bad comments. People do not like the thought of death... very uncomfortable, I lost my Mom in 2009... so I know, grief. I'm not alarmed or upset by it. They were what was done, and held dear to family. Good luck on this different auction, I think you will do well. Have a good one!

I know people are getting back to these today, mostly with new born babes, because after the devastating loss of a child the mother can't bear to see them but they know that in time they will. I am sure they will sell for way more then i have credits & they are worth it! I personally would hold on to until i found the right buyer because these are very collectible & can make one a nice profit. Thanks for your answers & sorry again for all of the "flak" you are receiving. As long as the owner of such photos are treat them with respect, caring & understanding there's no worries in owning them <3 Peace
