The listing, Vintage/Antique Victorian German Porcelain Hat Pin Holder - Artist Signed has ended.

***FREE SHIPPING***

This gorgeous German Hat Pin Holder is made of porcelain and signed "A. Koch". It's light weight and most of the porcelain ones were made mostly in Bavaria by the Hat Pin Holder Z.S. & Co.from 1880 to 1939. Upon researching I have found that this item had many uses. Not only can it be used for hats pins, some were used for incense or were used with a fragrant object under them, that is why there is a hole under it.

This lovely hand painted pin holder is decorated with green and purple grapes with grape leaves. The pin holder is a sage green background on the upper sides, and pale yellow color at the base with gold gilding on the top rim. This piece is marked on the bottom with "12128". In great condition with no chips, cracks or crazing this hat pin holder has 12 holes and measures approx. 4 1/2" t x 2 1/4" across the top and 2 1/2" across the bottom. This is a beautiful piece and would make a wonderful addition to your collection, or a nice gift :)

How do you know this is from Germany with no markings?

Like I said this was verified through my friend that owned a brick & mortar antique shop for over 30 yrs. I trust him. :)

Laughing at the posts about the hole in the bottom....I happen to own one of these and the holes in the top are relatively small, most hat pins have some sort of embellishment on the end weather it be a pearl, stone, ect.... Most will never be able to fall through the tiny hole.

Yeah, lonliestdove I see your point but that sure would be a small hat pin top in order to slip through those tiny holes. I don't know much about hat pins though. I don't have enough hair, and would probably stick myself.

Lol don't do that!

Well for me the hole in the bottom is genius if you think about it. What happens if your hat pin you just got and went to put it in the holder and whoops the top was small and went thru the tiny hole in the top, how else besides breaking would you recover the hatpin???

Yeah that is true too thanks lonliestdove :)

Here's my problem with the hole in the bottom. Sorry, I just can'r shake it. With the hole in the bottom if you were to pick up the hat pin holder, all of the pins would fall out. I swear, I'm like a dog with a bone, when I'm trying to figure something out, don't take it personally.

lol not a problem all I know is that it holds the pins, maybe at the time there was a plate that went with it..I don't know. But the using it as a diffuser for scents makes "sense" to me as well. I wish I knew more then that hun. :)

ok I didn't finish my train of though there LOL sorry debtate54, I meant in the beginning of that last comment that this one is German so I don't know how all of them were made in that time. I do know I have seen others like this though. :) it's late lol sorry. Now the hatpin I will be posting is something else the things I found on those. being 9" long I guess they put a law on how long they could be and considered them as a possible "weapon" women had hidden in their hats/hair lol but I've sold all I had but the one still. But there is books and books on Hatpins...It's amazing how many!

I'm sorry, I didn't finish my train of thought about the hole on the bottom. What struck me odd was that the majority of antique hat pin holders that I have seen all had the hole up at the top along with the small holes, or they had a small bowl at the bottom, sort of like a ring holder does.
Mar 5th, 2014 at 9:54:35 PM PST by
Original
This one is a doesn't have the bowl like your saying. I have seen both types so I know what you mean. I found it fascinating how I had no clue why the hole was there and that they would sometimes use it for that, kinda clever for the time I think :)

Are there any markings on this other than the artists signature? And of course the numbers on the bottom. Anything else? May I ask how you came across this? It's really very pretty. At first glance it looked like a very nice china salt shaker to me. Especially when I saw the bottom. ;) Seriously though I am curious about how you determined it's age and origin. I am interested

There are no other markings then the signature & numbers. I guess I can see how at first glance it would look like a salt shaker lol I got it from a antique dealer, and then took it to my friend who's been in the business for over 30 yrs dealing with antiques and he schooled me well on this piece. I also have one more 9" Hatpin I will be putting up here as well. :)
