magicJack is a device that plugs into a USB port on the user's computer, and uses a standard RJ-11 phone jack into which any standard phone can be plugged. This allows the user to make phone calls to almost any phone in the U.S. and Canada.

It is a computer peripheral that, in combination with telephony service from the related YMAX Corporation, provides Internet-based telephone service (VoIP) to the United States and Canada. The firm's primary product is a USB device that holds both the software necessary to place Internet-based telephone calls via a customer-supplied high-speed internet connection, and the electronics (technically known as a SLIC, or Subscriber Line Interface) supporting conventional landline telephones to be plugged directly into the device. The products are promoted through television infomercials and a website.

Magic Jack is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and also Intel Macs

you do have to leave your computer on to receive or make calls cause magic jack plugs into your usb jacks on your computer and they dont work with computer off.

I had a Magic Jack, but when I found out I'd have to leave the computer on all the time, I decided not to use it. I sold it in a yard sale. Now I'm kicking myself, cuz my computer's on most of the time now that I'm doing Listia.

i love my maqgic jack and the 40 to 60 bucks a month i save is great
i have had mine for 4 or 5 years every once in a while you need to do a down load
but it truely is a great peice of technoligy mine is attached to my desk computer
also you do need to let the computer on
you can take it with you on vacation plug it in to the internet there and make and reave phone calls just like you where at home you have 911 service voice mail
caller id you are supose to have 3 way calling i havent figured that out yet
free confrence calls you can set up it truly worth a million bucks\

We use a Magic jack as our sole home phone line I may bid on this one to add a second line for my son. Whats cool is with an open wifi connection in your house you can have many private lines without having to pay ALOT of money My mother used to pay 120 to at&t for 2 phone lines with unlimited long distance and with hers and my sisters computer she would have not have that monthly cost. But she never listens to me.

I have one and I loved, save a lot of money! You have to be connected to internet to be able to make/receive calls but if you are not connected you will be able to receive voice mails messages anyway and return the calls when you are connected.

You are partially right with saying they only have to pay 20 a year---if they want to reactivate it though there is a 10 dollar fee to change the phone number and account for them. and yes they will have to have the name and password on the account to do this I know for a fact because when they plug it into the computer to set it up the first thing it is going to ask is for the account name and password and without it you are stuck.

fanned u and i just wanted to say that i have a magic jack that we use as our regular home phone and its great..use anywhere you can get a wifi connection on a laptop and ur set! 20 bucks a year or 40 for 5 years something like that its different sometimes but awsome to have....call almost anywhere...hope you do good on this!!!!!!

Yes you can lol all you need is the searal # on the device...thats how I was able to use it because it was used when I got it.
